In May 2005 the Zimbabwean government embarked on a clean-up of its cities and towns under an initiative code-named 'Operation Murambatsvina' or 'Operation Restore Order'.

It described the programme as a way to rid towns and cities of illegal housing, slum areas and illegal traders.

A United Nations report later estimated that around 700,000 people lost their homes and described the operation as having been carried out in an indiscriminate and unjustified manner. Derek Moyo visited people affected by the clearances.
