Modern-day slaves pay a high price for freedom

Some campaigners estimate that there are around 20 million people living as bonded labourers around the world, so indebted to their owners that they often have to work every day with only food and accommodation as payment.

The government of Nepal has released hundreds of thousands of bonded labourers, with the promise of a rehabilitation package to help them survive their new found freedom.

Four years later, though, many of them say they want to go back to the safety net of bonded labour. Deepa Rai finds out why.
