In Bangladesh shrimps are produced in huge numbers. It’s now a major export earner. Liberalising export rules has helped the industry grow and it brings in money for around 600,000 people.

But the sector has been fraught with controversy. Campaigners say it is causing environmental exploitation and that many are employed in poor conditions.

But the biggest threat has come in the shape of consumer safety standards negotiated at the World Trade Organisation. Qudrate e Moula reports.
