In Nepal, getting through formal schooling by passing the national high school exams is a major challenge. The majority of failures are girls and students from underprivileged rural communities.

Nepal's ten-year armed conflict has had an impact. Schools in rural areas have often borne the brunt of the conflict between Maoist insurgents and government security forces.

One rural community has started a radio initiative to help students catch up with classes and improve results.
