At the last official count only thirteen per cent of Malawians were in work. The Malawi Poverty Reduction Strategy pledged extra social spending for poor people but much of that hasn't happened.

International donors could support the costs through forgiving some of the country's debt but have held back, accusing the government of overspending in other budget areas.

Local groups have made their own efforts to get young people into work. Hilary Mbobe visited a carpentry workshop for street children in Blantyre.
