Rachael van der Kooye is a freelance journalist working for newspapers, radio and television in Suriname. Over the last fifteen years she has specialized on environment and development issues, raising and improving awareness in Suriname. At present she is a journalism lecturer at the Academy for Journalism (AHKCO) and president of Surinamese Union of Journalists (SVJ).

The conservation of forests in countries like Suriname with high forest cover and low deforestation rates is not a priority for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Yet forest people suffer enormously from the effects of climate change.
