Voices from the mountain: China

China's market-oriented economic reforms have produced some remarkable results at the national level, but deep poverty remains, especially in rural areas. The poorest of the country's poor live in the mountains.

This booklet features interviews from two contrasting mountainous areas: with minority peoples in the southwest, and with the majority Han in the northeast. Almost all interviews were with women who have become the main labour force in many rural areas.
